Quilter's Day at the Fairground is an annual event for quilters held on the second Saturday in February each year.

The event is a day with a difference each year, the morning activity normally takes the form of a workshop but this varies from year to year in style and content with a speaker in the afternoon to provide a day packed full of interest for quilters.  Mornings are interactive with hands-on participation; retail therapy with specialist suppliers; an abundance of refreshments and companionable conversation. Afternoon speakers bring their expertise and examples of their craft for your entertainment.

The venue is the “Village Hall”, at The Fairground Craft and Design Centre, Weyhill, Andover, Hants., SP11 0QN

The Fairground Design and Craft Centre is non-profit-making and is home to a variety of craft workshops and studios including a contemporary gallery with a rolling programme of exhibitions

The lunch time is perfect for not only visiting our “captive” suppliers but for taking a walk around the retail outlets of the Design and Craft Centre. If you wish to treat yourself to lunch at the on site café, Ewe and I,  you can order this on the day, otherwise, bring your own lunch.

2011 Programme

Saturday 12 February 2011 saw 100 ladies plus helpers pouring into the Village Hall at the Weyhill Fairground to take part in the annual Quilters Day at the Fairground. The mystery workshop devised by Jenny Rundle had everyone cutting and sewing felt into a heart shape decorated with flowers and leaves and neatly stuffed into a 3-d shape.

The recipe for the Orange and Marzipan Cakes is on our LINKS page.

  On the day

Creative Quilting from Hampton Court was our trader this year and it was no effort at all to part with money and buy more fabric (as well as buttons, magazines, notions etc) !

In the afternoon Elinor Kapp from Cardiff entertained everyone with her story-telling weaving links between fairy tales and threads, webs and stitching.  Elinor is the author of “Rigmaroles and Ragamuffins”; Elinor delved into the meanings of words that she became familiar with during her work as a textile artist. Elinor says, “I can enchant you with fluffers, spin you a yarn, find you a silver lining and turn your meeting into a gala occasion.” Elinor gave a very entertaining and informative talk and she is full of information relating to textiles and language.

In the exhibition gallery of the Fairground we had a small show of quilts sent in for A Gift of Quilts, the Olympic project for 2012.  Wonderfully colourful and attracting a lot of interest from the visiting quilters and members of the public visiting the cafe and craft centre.

We had a waist expanding selection of cakes and biscuits to savour with the tea and coffee  dispensed by our lovely ladies in the kitchen. A favourite this year was the Marzipan and Orange slice and you will find the recipe for this on our Links page. Enjoy!

Where would we be without Mary's help?
